Do you read other historical romances besides Highlander romances? If so, what ones? And do you read contemporary romances or primarily stick to historical romances?
I love my Highlands and have no intention to stop writing them but sometimes I get a hankering to write other types of romances. It is the reason my Pepper the Prepper series was born. With my love of mystery and romance I wanted a mystery with an ongoing couple in a good romantic relationship since I find it annoying when I read a mystery series that has gone on and on and the couple still haven’t gotten anywhere in their relationship.

I love any historical romance. They are my first pick over contemporary romance.
Hi Donna
I love Highland romances and pretty much have stuck to them. I have read every single one of yours at least twice! ( I love them that much) I read one or two English romances but didn’t appreciate them as much as Highlander ones. The men are real men those in the other romances are dandies lol!
Keep writing! I will keep reading them
I love all historical romances, but anything before the renaissance is my favorite (more recent history…if it can be called that…is a bit less interesting to me). Regardless, I prefer historical romances of any kind over contemporary, as I find they offer more room to imagine a completely different world and offer a bit of an escape from the everyday.
I’m on the second book of Pepper the Prepper and I’m loving it. I like a light hearted mystery with a touch of romance! I enjoy all the characters, as well as the modern day setting. I like to mix up the genres. A little historical then current day and then maybe a recent era in history like WWII.
I love a good series! I enjoy your work!
I love the Highlander romance novels the most, but I also like to read some Regency romances, Mary Balough is a favorite for the Regency romance books. Also, really like some contemporary romance/suspense romance novels. Karen Robards being one my favorite authors for this genre.
I do not like contemporary books myself. I prefer historical romance, and love the Scottish Highlanders, they are my favorites. I do like some Viking stories, but that’s about it. I prefer the era to be in the 1300’s too. I used to like the English historical romance, but not so much anymore. You are amazing author for Scottish Highlanders and that’s why I will read anything in the era you write.
I read many types of historical as well as contemporary novels I am now retired and have an opportunity to read a great deal and have found it to be one of my most enjoyable activities. If a book is interesting and well written, it is always a delight to become immersed in the storyline.
I love to read most any historical romance story. I do indeed read about the highlands. There’s a few involving time travel which I enjoyed very much.
Thank you.
I love Highlander books and Regency period the best. Will read other historical time periods some, but don’t really read contemporary.
I read primarily contemporary romances. As for historical, it depends on the story and the characters. I tend to stick to favorites like yourself unless I see a good review of a book by an unread author.
Highland are my fav. Followed closely by Regency. I do read highly recommended contemporary romance, but always come back to my historicals. Gotta get my fix!
I love the historical romance; they have always been my favored.
I read pretty much any historical before WWI. I love stories about the Picts (your books over this era were fantastic), Highlanders, American West, nobility in Europe, and Biblical times.
Once WWI is over, I start really losing interest so I generally do not read contemporary romance books.
I read primarily medieval books set in Scotland. Everyday life was so much different from today. My mind escapes to contemplate how I might deal with their situations, and I leave this time of constant noise to imagine a less complicated time (although not necessarily a less dangerous one).
Hi, just to give my opinion historical romance, regency, Scottish and Victorian. No contemporary, I do love time travel.
I prefer the highland romance novels and have read all of yours more than once. Of course my favorites by far are the Cree and Dawn stories. Please continue to expand on their story as I can’t wait to read more about their special love story. It takes me away from my everyday life and transforms it into a new world and makes me so happy I hate it when the book is done. I love your writing and look forward to reading more.
Also read regency historical romance, like Donna Grants series Dark Kings and Reapers series also.
I do read other authors about historical romances. You are my favorite author by the way. I will read romance no matter the time period but I prefer the alpha males and Scottish romances you write. The pepper new series, I really enjoyed the first book and will continue the series. I love mysteries and the challenges the characters face!!
Thank you for writing your books!
I enjoy reading your highland books but also enjoy any and all historical books, add a few true facts and I’m in history heaven, love Johanna Lyndsey and Roberta Gellis… the list could go on forever. Long may you all scribble.😂😘
I read most genres of historical romance, though I’m least fond of those set in the Tudor court or any other place where there’s a lot of intrigue and nasty people. I don’t like a lot of angst (probably since I’ve lived long enough to experience enough in real life and I just want to relax when I read). But I’m also part Scottish so Highland romances are among my favorites.
I do read both, but contemporary has to have an inventive plot, not the usual shallow, predictable stuff you get a dime a dozen. As for historical romance, I read all kinds, but my fave is Vikings and time travel.
I love all history romances from highlands to 16-17-18 century but must have a happy ending and a bit of a twist to it. But any books by you I love
I would like to see you write more historical western romance such as your Rancheros series, Tame My Wild Touch, etc.
I read a lot of historicals but go more for those set in Scotland and the Regency period
I love Highlander historical romance fiction best. I also like Napoleonic time period with settings in France and Britian. Another period I really like is American Revolutionary War and Founding, especially since I live in the Philadelphia area. Wish there were more novels set during this time period of such great significance.
My favorite are the highland historical romance so please do t stop writing those! To answer your question, I enjoy British historical romance books (1700-1850)
and American historical romance
(example: Into the Wilderness series). I’m not into modern day romance at all. The contemporary books I enjoy are series by authors such as Kathy Reichs, Mark Greaney, Vince Flynn, and Jeffery Deavers.
I hope I win the Amazon Gift Card!! 😂
I love all your books. My favorite is historical highland romance, but I am enjoying your Pepper books. I like the mystery in the Pepper books and the Highland Mysteries. You really hit all my buttons for reading.
I read mostly highlander stories. A few years ago historical was about all I read but then I started with contemporary stuff which is mostly all I read now. Your books are the only highlander books I read now. However, I’d read anything you write!
I love the Highland Romances you write. The relationships are so well written between the men and the women. I like to escape the daily grind and simply like to get away to another time and place to do so. I recently lost my husband so I will not make it to Scotland any time soon. I do also read Mysteries. (Lisa Gardner, Mary Burton and Tess Gerritsen are favorites) I can never figure out the villain, but I like the challenge. Thank you for your excellent work!
I love the Regency, Highland and Medevil romance stories. Not a huge fan of contemporary outside of Miranda Lee for Harlequin. Your Highland stories are right up there with Julie Garwood historical’s for me.
Sending you hugs! My go to is historical romance, but yes I do read contemporary romance. 🥰
I read all types of fiction from historical to contemporary. Lately , I have found some authors who enjoy adding the angst of todays issues into their book . I read to escape and relax . I do not choose authors who push their own political opinion . I like regency and highlands the best, but I have loved your “westerns” and Pepper is just a delight ! Your writing is my favorite:)
I read any type of historical books, especially Victorian era.
I read yours and ones semi close to yours. I love the new series pepper the pepper series. Not much on some of the new stuff. Read several but not my read
I love historical romance. I read novels about them from the 1400’s to 1800’s. I tend to focus on Scotland, England and America. I do enoy reading about the Caribbean and Jamaica too. I guess you could say I LOVE historical romance!
Yes, I do read other historical romances besides Highlander romances. Historical romances will always be my first love. My favorite is Regency and Victorian.
I just wrote a long response and touched something and it disappeared. Lol. I will start again!
I love your Highlander novels and really love the Dragon kings ones. I like long novels that let the characters develop. Escape from these times is what i look for. Time travel from modern times to the distance past is what I like to escape into. Druids. Witches, magic are my forte. One of the reasons i like the King novels is because many character are repeated. Development of each “Dragon” makes me want to read the next one asap! The Outlander series does this to some extent. Your novels have the mystery in each which i like. I like more than the romance,Which is super, but a mystery or a solution to events, etc., is what i crave. Keep it up, please! Mystery, time travel, druids, Great heroes, love, conflict, magic, etc. Wow!
Hi Cher, I read your post and being a fan of both Donna Fletcher and Donna Grant, I think you have your Donna’s mixed up. Donna Grant writes the Dragon Kings.
Hi Donna,
I love Medieval romance, Highlands being my favorite. I would love to see your take on one of my favorite eras, which is during the reign of William the Conqueror.
Forgot to add that Vikings and English characters in the distant past are ones i like also. Time travel in these eras offer a great read, too. Again mystery is enjoyable in these times. I love to escape and get involved in these characters lives. In today’s times your novels offer this escape that many crave.
I mostly read historical highlander romance. I read some European historical romance. I never read American romance. I believe romance died in 1900 so I never read modern romance. I like historical fiction where all the characters have straight white teeth, Bathe regularly and women with not a single body hair. That’s my favorite. LOL
Historical romances only for me ! I love my highlanders also but I also enjoy regency settings as well .
Hello! I’ve only recently started reading historical romances and I’m very picky about which ones I read. I am NOT a fan of regency novels for example. Or of historical romances that deal mostly with what I’ll call “high society” Kings and courts and tons, and titled lords and ladies. I prefer your type of historical romances that mostly just deal with laird’s and their lands. (With maybe occasional mentions of some king that are generally vague and not much related to the story line) I did very much enjoy your Pict King trilogy though and would love to see you do more stories in that time period. Mostly I read contemporary romantic suspense or contemporary paranormal romance, or fantasy romance like T.A. White’s Pathfinder series (and her Firebird Chronicles) or Jennifer L Armentrout’s Blood and Ash books. And I gotta tell ya I’m really looking forward to the new trilogy you’ve got coming out because of the touch of the paranormal that’s been hinted at in Highland Secrets. I really love it when authors do that. Have a romantic suspense book or a historical romance with a touch of the unexplained. A witch, a ghost, a bit of magic or a psychic ability.. And I did read your first Pepper the Prepper book and enjoyed it enough that book two is on my to read list. (Which is huge and always growing.. LOL) But I don’t read mystery novels much because they tend to be clean or clean-ish and I like my sexy times in the books I read. Although I don’t mind slow burn romance, unless it turns into a behind closed doors/fade to black scene when the characters finally get around to getting together. In short.. I like action, suspense, good guys and gals conquering to bad guys and gals, fantastic characters you can fall in love with, sexy times and great story lines with incredible settings (sometimes with a slight paranormal twist) all of which you deliver! I hope this helps. I can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
I’m a lover of highland romance. I have tried contemporary and just never connected with them..UNTIL….Pepper The Prepper!! OMG! I am absolutely loving this series! I love the humor, camaraderie between characters, the mystery and of course Pepper and Ian! Fantastic reading! I’m sure as a writer, you might get a little tired of writing about the same kinds of stories all of the time and would like something different to challenge yourself?! I believe at this point whatever you choose to write about, I would love it!
Hi Donna , my favorite are highland historical romances , and I’ve read all your books , and loved reading every one of them
I love and read anything you write
My favorite books are Highlander books, and I have many and love reading your books. I read them again and love them more. I also like reading some Regency books and contemporary Seal/Military romance and suspense. And of course, I love cowboys so I read historical and contemporary westerns. I enjoy and read a lot of books!!
I love Highlander Historical Romance but will also read Regency Era Historical Romance. I have loved your Pepper the Prepper cozy mysteries as well. I feel the same about strong couples working together and not dragging it out.
In answer to your question, as child & young adult, my favorite genres were science fiction & western & that has not change that much. But I also read my mother’s books too. As I got older, I read everything but horror, from fairy tales & mythology to historical stories to modern to biographies & lot of different genres in between. I just love to read.
Please write more about Cree & Dawn. I fell in love with them & the era they live in. Beyond my love of sf/fi & westerns, history of the that time period has always fascinated me.
Stay safe & stay COOL! Martha Anne Morton in Macon, GA
I absolutely love highland romances, they have to have a strong storyline though not just be about the romance.
I have read both the Pepper books and am really enjoying the contemporary mystery storyline.
Looking forward to more books in the Pepper series.
Have you considered delving into the land of the fey at all? I modern day adventure with the fairies would be great.
Thanks for sharing your gift with us. Xx
I love books that has a mystery and a couple who are having to work together to figure out who did it. Another type of books I Iove to read are the ones that make me laugh. When the couple fuss while they are getting to know and like each other.
